Over The Seas is my third full length album and second album as a solo artist. It is a collection of songs that I gathered while on an extensive tour in Europe with legendary soul singer Bettye Lavette. We left Europe and landed in Seattle, Washington for a few shows and a couple of days off. The name Over The Seas references this journey as a songwriter and as a traveling musician.
Seattle is a special place for me when I get a chance to visit there. There’s truly unique feel to that city. So I decided to booked time at Sound House Studios on my days off and asked Bettye Lavette’s backing band to record with me. After two days in the studio we recorded all of the “bed tracks” before I flew home to Detroit to begin working on the overdubs. Even though I finished most of the overdubs in Detroit, I feel that this album really belongs to Seattle.
The cover of the album is an old photo of Pioneer Square in Seattle from the turn of the century. The totem pole has a very unique history about it. It was stolen from the Tlingit people, burned down in 1938 and then the city of Seattle asked the Tlingit Tribe to replace it with a new one. It was only after they replaced it that they were finally paid for the totem pole that was originally stolen from them. It’s still there to this day! The Northwest pine forests where laid over the picture in order to add that other element that Seattle offers, it’s beautiful nature. There’s also a second thought of what that represents. I’m a person that is concerned about all that has been lost through the years such as nature, culture, traditions and a since of community. Over The Seas also marks the first time that my wife Rachel sings with me on an album. She’s featured on the song “In Our Hearts” and also on a song that I wrote about our wedding day called “My Promise.” “My Promise” was actually written in my hotel room the day before these sessions started. I was happy to craft it there.
As I mentioned before, Over The Seas also features Bettye Lavette’s touring band. Al Hill is on the Keyboards, James Simonson is on the Bass and Darryl Pierce is on the Drums. Also featured is my Detroit crew: Max Bauhof on percussion, Regina Varnado and Brent McKay on Backing Vocals, Jimmy Smith on Trumpet and James Hughes on Saxophone. Peter Jay mixed and mastered the album.
If I were asked which track would be my favorite, I would have to say Holding Ground but if you have a favorite please let me know at www.brettlucas.com or on my Facebook Page www.facebook.com/brettlucasmusic.
Enjoy!

Second Avenue Crush, released in 2009, was Brett Lucas' first solo album. At the time, he was the fresh new guitarist in Bettye Lavette touring band, renting a flat off Second Avenue in Detroit, and writing songs about love; yes that subject that is filled with passion, heartache and joy. The album's sound is centered with his voice and acoustic guitar. His sunburst Fender Stratocaster writhes melodically around his vocal lines while cello, played by Jeff Ehrinpreis, adds to delicate emotion of this album. Eric Johnson completes the sound with his lush resonating Piano tones and the mighty rhythm section is held down solid by Chuck Bartels on Bass and Julian VanSlyke on drums.
If you're a fan of Eric Clapton's albums from the 70's, the sweet sounds of Van Morrison's hits, or the modern acoustic song stylings of Ray LaMontange and Damien Rice, then you'll love Second Avenue Crush.

Saint Cecilia was a hard working Detroit three piece band that drew from it’s Detroit Blues roots while creatively expanding song form and style. This power trio featured Todd Glass on Drums, James Simonson on bass and Brett Lucas on Guitar/Vocals. The combination of Brett’s Blues-based guitar with James’ Funk/Jazz influenced bass lines and Todd “The Thunder God’s” almighty beat, stirred into a powerful concoction.
Saint Cecilia featured eight original songs by Brett Lucas and two covers. The album features five instrumental songs and five songs with vocals. “We've decided to include more instrumentals along with vocal songs into our sets to get away from a typical approach. We want to try to continue the tradition of playing cool instrumental music that groups like The Meters, The Ventures, and Booker T and the MG’s performed”
Some of the highlights of this album include their cover of Detroit’s own Dennis Coffey’s version of “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin; It’s Funky. They tip their hat to the Chicago Blues sound with Jimmy Dawkin’s “Server’s Me Right To Suffer.” Brett’s Washington Rain and Never Be are straight up Blues Rock at it’s finest. Instrumentals such as Do That and Oh Snap are uniquely Saint Cecilia. They even stretch out to outer space with March of Locrians. Enjoy!

Tosha Owens is one of Detroit finest Blues/Soul singers. She belongs to the next generation of legends to come from the Motor City. Brett Lucas and Tosha teamed up to write and record her first album Wrong Side of Right. Since then it has won many Detroit Music Awards.
This combination proved to be very dynamic; resulting in seven co-written songs, including the featured video single “Cold In Detroit Tonight”. There’s also three of Brett’s original compositions featured and two choice covers. Tosha’s does justice with Janis Joplin’s “Half Moon” and a fun party version of Ray Charles’ “Ain’t That Love.”
Not only does Wrong Side of Right feature some of Brett’s finest guitar work and Tosha’s greatest vocal performances, but it also features some of Detroit’s top musicians including Chuck Bartels, Max Bauhof, Even Mercer, Bobby Murray, Rachel Williams, Keith Kaminski, John Douglas and many more! This is an album not to be missed.
